Usirigaagi Hasiru is a youth-driven environmental initiative founded by a social work educator with the support of four MSW trainees. The initiative began on 26 January 2015 and was officially registered under the Indian Trusts Act (1882) in 2016.
The founder believes that planting a tree means planting hope. Over the past decade, Usirigaagi Hasiru has planted more than 48,000 saplings, achieving a survival rate of 65–70%. The initiative has transformed schools, grazing lands, and public spaces across the Bayaluseeme region of Karnataka into vibrant green campuses.
Beyond environmental conservation, Usirigaagi Hasiru has established children’s libraries, promoted biodiversity awareness, reduced plastic use, and launched pioneering initiatives such as Green Celebrations, Kitchen Gardens, Tree Conservation, Water for the Voiceless, and Puneetha Namana.

A group of youth pursuing their Master’s in Social Work (MSW) at Bangalore University, led by faculty Dr. Gangadhara Reddy N, began plantation activities on January 26, 2015, to conserve the natural environment. The first drive was held at the Government Lower Primary School, Chalakayalaparthi village, Chikkaballapur district, initially involving four trainees, Mr. Srinath M, Mr. Manjunath, Mr. Madhukumar S, and Mr. Subramani M along with local youth and elders of the village. Gradually, the initiative grew to include the entire MSW class and expanded from small-scale public plantations to large-scale drives across all schools in the taluk, engaging local youth, children, and community members. Guided by social work principles and participatory approaches, all activities were carefully planned and executed. After initial meetings and discussions at the Jnanabharathi Campus, the group was formally registered as a trust in 2016, marking the official beginning of Usirigaagi Hasiru’s organized environmental movement.

– Planting Hope, Inspiring Change
Dr. Gangadhara Reddy N., MSW, M.Phil., Ph.D. (Social Work), is a passionate environmentalist, farmer, educator, and social work professional, currently serving as Faculty at the Department of Social Work, Bangalore University, Bengaluru.
With a vision for a greener, healthier and more sustainable society, he launched plantation drives with his dedicated MSW students in 2015, which soon grew into Usirigaagi Hasiru—a youth-led environmental movement registered as a trust in 2016. Under his leadership, the initiative has planted thousands of saplings, created hundreds of green schools, set up children’s libraries and a computer lab, promoted eco-friendly celebrations, discouraged plastic use, and pioneered campaigns like kitchen gardens, tree conservation and Water for the Voiceless.
The initial act of sapling plantation has evolved into a powerful community movement that revives ecosystems, inspires collective responsibility, and nurtures hope for future generations. Dr. Reddy’s journey proves that one individual’s vision, when rooted in dedication, can blossom into a legacy of change.
